The Epic Games store had problems on Thursday, while fans hurried to download a free copy of Grand Theft Auto V.
A few minutes after making the game free online the swelling of the application slowed down the site and sent error messages.
Epic blamed the slowdown in "heavy traffic" and said it was working to fix it.
Grand Theft Auto, known as GTA for fans, is produced by Rockstar Games and is one of the best selling game franchises.
Every week Epic Games makes a "mysterious game" available for free in its shop. The games are available for PC or Mac. Users who download the mystery game of the week can keep it forever, even when the free download period expires.
Wednesday was announced that Grand Theft Auto V would be the game this week.
The game became available at 11:00 EDT (15:00 GMT). Within minutes of launch, users began reporting slowdowns and error messages.
On Twitter, the company tried to calm the fans down.
Epic Games attributed the slowdown to strong demand.
Grand Theft Auto V has earned more than any other single game ever released, according to MarketWatch. More than 100 million copies have been sold since its release in 2013.
The slowdown and crashes seem to have lasted several hours and have also caused problems on other Epic platforms.
Fortnite, produced by Epic, appears to have problems with its launcher and the Battle Breakers mobile game has also encountered problems.
The Grand Theft Auto V download offer is valid until May 21st. In January, Epic Games said it planned to give away free games every week until 2020.
