  • Never use an apostrophe with years. I turned 21 in the 1970s, not the 1970′s.
  • Use an apostrophe with these plurals: numbers other than years (there are two 7′s on this page); words used as words (there are too many but’s in that sentence); letters of the alphabet (Mississippi is spelled with four s’s, four i’s and two p’s).
