Today’s two grammar tips:
- Colons and semicolons always go outside the quotation mark.
Wrong:
Bill said, “I’ll go to the dentist next week;” now we’ll see whether he’ll follow through.
Right:
Bill said, “I’ll go to the dentist next week”; now we’ll see whether he’ll follow through.
- If only yes or no is quoted, you don’t have to use quotation marks.
Right:
Jim said yes.
Also right:
Jim said, “Yes.”
