Grammar Friday

By Pjfaur @peterfaur

Grammar FridayToday’s two grammar tips:

  • Don’t be confused by nouns of amount. Treat them like collective nouns. Also, ask yourself whether you’re talking about the amount as a whole or as individual units. So, you would say, “Five hundred dollars is a lot of money,” but “Five 100-dollar bills are missing.”
  • Don’t be confused by mathematical phrases. “One and one is two” is correct, not “One and one are two.” Think of the phrase “one and one” as a concept, not two separate numbers standing side by side.
