Today’s two grammar tips:

• This is from one of the Web’s great grammarians, Grammar Girl, also known as Mignon Fogarty. A quick way to test whether you’ve used a colon correctly is to see whether you can substitute the word namely for the colon. It would be correct to write, “When I packed, I forgot two items: my toothbrush and my pajamas.” Also, a colon should follow a complete sentence or full thought, so it would be incorrect to write, “When I packed, I forgot: my toothbrush and my pajamas.”
• A warranty is a legal assurance that an object can perform a specified task or meets certain quality standards. A warrantee is the person who benefits from a warranty.
