Human and child trafficking has long been a rampant disease in many developing nations, but especially in South Asian countries. Millions of children are subjected to violence, exploitation, and abuse every year. Authorities are now exploring the use of GPS and wireless tracking technology to establish a cross-border program to combat these heinous crimes.
India has been the preferred transit destination for human trafficking in South Asia. Children suffer through cheap or unpaid labor exploitation, prostitution, forced marriage, organ harvesting and other unimaginable horrors. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is now spearheading the development of GPS tracking technology that will share data and streamline the flow of information between neighboring countries.
The timeline being considered would have the program operational by 2015. The plan would be that all eight participating SAARC countries would have an integrated GPS tracking system in place by that time. This would lead to improvements in efforts to locate missing children, and to better facilitate a rehabilitation program. Over 1.2 million children are trafficked worldwide every year, so the sooner the technology is deployed, the better.
