Google’s New ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ Button

Posted on the 22 August 2013 by Jyoti Arora @Jy0tiAr0ra

Google’s famous ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button has recently gone through a major change. Till now, it was used just for leading the user to the top result for the search query. But now, it has been re-designed to promote several Google services like Google Art Project, Google Trends etc.

To use this new button, just hover your mouse pointer over the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button. The button will scroll through all the services available and stop randomly at one of those services. If you don’t like that services, just move your mouse pointer away and then back again over the button. This will start another scroll leading to a different result. Other than this, the user has no control over where the scroll would stop. I do wish I could just select the service quickly, without having to hover back and forth over the button.

But anyway, it still is a lot of fun. Here are the services that have been so far made available through the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button.

  1. I’m Feeling Wonderful:  random World Wonder Project
  2. I’m Feeling Hungry: search for restaurants
  3. I’m Feeling Artistic: random Google Art Project
  4. I’m Feeling Doodly: random doodle
  5. I’m Feeling Stellar: image search for [orion+nebula]
  6. I’m Feeling Puzzled: random A Google A Day question
  7. I’m Feeling Playful: random interactive doodle
  8. I’m Feeling Trendy: Google Hot Trends

Some people might consider this change as a means of blatant promotion of Google Services. Some might even miss the old ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button, even though it had actually become useless when Google launched Google Instant in 2010. Google Instant is an optional service that can be used to display the search result as you type. It can be switched on and off from the Search Settings.

For those just looking to while away some idle minutes, the new ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button offers some very cool options.

And if you are wondering what would happen to the funny Google tricks that used the old ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button, than they still work. Just type the query text in the Search Bar, the Google Instant will show you the top results, When you hover over any of them, the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ text will appear towards the right of that result. Just click on it over the correct result, and enjoy the trick. Here’s an example, just try searching for ‘Google Gravity,’ but instead of hitting enter, click on the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ that appears on the top search result.

Enjoy!
