A new study was just released by The Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University’s School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. It offers details about people’s sexual experiences and how males and females from adolescents to adults (ages 14 to 94) feel about sex. Not surprisingly, the results fall along gender lines. Some of the findings include condom use by teenagers, frequency of sexual activity of both married and unmarried adults, sexual satisfaction, same gender sexual interaction, and different types of sexual activity that people engage in- intercourse was only one among 40 acts discussed. It is the most detailed study on sexuality to come out in the last 20 plus years.
There were a number of surprising findings, but one that was not- at least for women. Males reported greater satisfaction with their sexual experiences and less pain upon intercourse than women did- and the differences were significant. Duhhh…
If you are a man and are reading this, keep these results in mind the next time you engage in sexual activity with a woman. She may be making the right sounds and movements to please you, but not getting much pleasure herself. If you are in a relationship and your partner is less interested in sex than you are, consider why with these findings in mind. If you are a woman, think about bringing up this study with your partner. If you are in a new relationship, it is OK to tell a man how you are feeling, what is working for you and what is not- and to offer him some guidance along the way. Guys aren’t mind readers- and most want to please their partners.
