While – for the most part - Are You Falling In Love’s strong twee/emo framed melodies didn’t engage me, on “For You”, Atlanta band Gold-Bears reemerges with a near-flawless punk-pop song conjuring the swinging jitters of Buzzcocks at their very best. Gone are the debut albums heavily nostalgia-driven songs that mostly sounded like semi-budget carbon-copies of mid-90s Yo La Tengo. “For You” still carries its shear amount of sweetness and emotional upsurge, but its juxtaposed by immediate, restless melodies and startling guitar tones that overshadows any prejudgments I have of bands staying too close to their roots. This is truly a wonderful surprise.
Gold-Bears’ second LP is titled Dalliance, and is out June 3 via Slumberland.
