Going In Blind: The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, Mulholland Dr, Sabbath Queen

The Seed of the Sacred Fig- If you thought this one was going to talk about that fantastic audio description track Neon made that you didn’t realize existed, you are going to be sorely disappointed. Sadly, Neon did not put audio description on this film, and I did sit through it. actually, I was given a physical screener for this, so they could have included alternate tracks, but they didn’t. There’s no known audio description, which sucks for those of us who are interested in International Cinema, or are trying to check Oscar nominees off our bucket list for the year. Iranian cinema has pleasantly surprised me in the past with A Hero, but certainly A Separation, which would be in my personal top 10 films I’ve seen that were not in the English language. That movie stays with you. I did really want to watch Sacred Fig too, and I was really hoping that the pickup by neon would lead to audio description, but like they ignored Handling the undead (another international entry from 2024) they don’t seem to value the blind and low vision moviegoers in their non-English content. Although, Anatomy Of A Fall did have an excellent track, so who knows what triggers audio description at Neon.

Unwatchable Due To Lack Of Audio description

Mulholland dr.- This entry popped up in response to David Lynch’s death. it was the film of his that I could find with audio description. I hate to admit that there are some heavy hitters by Lynch that I didn’t see before losing my sight, and have no known audio description. Interestingly, i did see this one way back when it came out, and it was too weird for me at the time. revisiting it years later, and the movie is still weird, but I’ve become accustomed to more of this brand of film. This wasn’t so much a review of the movie as it was an opportunity to talk about David Lynch as a filmmaker, through a title with recorded audio description. Lynch was a risk taking filmmaker, and seeing this film really does put it into perspective. Mulholland dr. Was originally conceived as a TV pilot, but when it didn’t get a series order at ABC, it gave Lynch the latitude to shape it into a feature film instead. That is perhaps why the cast feels more like a TV ensemble than a film, but even with that knowledge, it would have been an impressive follow-up to Twin peaks for Lynch as a director. Some people really love this movie. I did like it now more that I’m not in high school, but I think I probably never got a chance to see his best work, and it doesn’t have audio description.

No Grade Given.

Sabbath Queen- PArt of the onslaught of year-end screeners was this LGBTQ documentary on having pride, and also being Jewish, and what that looks like. or, even identifying as LGBTQ and also being a rabbi. it feels like what so many people go through in queer culture, with found families, and paving their own safe spaces in and around people who reject them. to have faith, to maintain faith, when it is so consistently used against you, is something I’ve always found fascinating. I’m not putting a grade on it, because the film lacks audio description, but I liked it enough that I can safely recommend it to sighted readers. there’s no way accessibility could be added to this documentary and cause me to go all the way from what would likely be an A-, all the way down to where I would end up with a rotten grade, and a do not recommend.
