An unknown creature has been kept a secret and watched for 15 years until it all starts to move again, but this time it is woken. This causes Godzilla to also surface (don’t expect to see him early on though!)
We start the story in Japan with a what seems normal day for young Ford heading off to school and his parents going to work. Something happens though and his mother is killed, leaving his father Joe to obsess and try to find out what really happened that night. The creatures we find out feed on radiation and therefore can absorb all the power from things around them causing power cuts.
I found myself very disappointed with how long it took to eventually see Godzilla, mind you though when you eventually get to the fight scene it really is impressive. I don’t know if I can bring myself to say worth the wait as the build up was very slow towards that. It does have a lot of action it just takes a while to get to it. Ford is our hero and everything is about him getting home to his wife and son.
So don’t be fooled that this is all about Godzilla as it really isn’t, he is just a part of the film. The big story is the creatures using what humans have created against them and of course Ford’s journey. That’s not a bad thing of course as Aaron Taylor-Johnson really does put in a brilliant performance throughout this film and carries it all very well.
It has plenty of destruction and some great action scenes to watch, so stick with it as it does take some getting to that point. But I guess the big build up is to really build suspense around it all. Which I guess worked very well as I was really starting to wonder when our first glimpse of Godzilla was going to be. The CGI really does look very impressive for it as well, taking on board the facial expression we have seen from these type of characters.
The overall cast of supporting actors is very impressive as well, with a few well-known faces in a different type of film. Something which gives the film an extra edge as well, showing that it does have a good core to it all, especially Ken Wantanabe and Sally Hawkins.
This is the first big action film heading into the summer and I am sure it is going to do very well at the box office and action film fans will enjoy it from start to finish! I cannot really make my mind up if I liked the film or not, as it did feel really slow to begin with.
