Go for Broke: Witchcraft Works

Posted on the 08 July 2014 by Kaminomi @OrganizationASG

Go For BrokeI AM BACK FROM JAPAN EXPO! More dead than alive but I am back!

The story of Witchcraft Works follows Takamiya Honoka, a normal boy, we could even say he is pretty uninteresting. Yet, one day his life is saved by the school’s darling, Kagari Ayaka, and his life stops being normal.

Witchcraft Works

The appearance of normalcy is exactly why I started watching. It all started with a very normal situation that gradually became crazier and crazier until nothing was normal anymore. That was probably my favorite aspect of the whole thing. I really liked being pulled slowly into that craziness rather than being forced to jump into it. It changes from many other works that don’t bother explaining anything.

Witchcraft Works is, as expected, an anime about witchcraft. Kagari is a witch, Takamiya somehow becomes a witch, everyone is a witch, or something like that.

Again, as expected, everyone is fighting over Takamiya who is, obviously again, the holder of something very rare and precious that everyone is after. Of course again Takamiya learns how to protect himself, or at least he tries to. And of course again, everything works as expected. You cannot say Witchcraft Works is anything special at all, but at the same time, the plot was rather entertaining. Because it was crazy. And I like crazy. Unfortunately, I don’t think the crazy part has been done well enough. Somehow, it was trying too hard while also trying to have a serious plot. In the end, the plot was a bit boring and the crazy parts weren’t as funny as they could have been.

The cast of characters was fortunately a bit more interesting than the plot.

Kagari is probably the craziest one. She is pretty cute in the way she loves and cares for Takamiya. She is a bit aloof but also a damn strong character, both physically or mentally. She never once falters from her goal and I find that admirable. She is voiced by Seto Asami, who is gradually getting more attention. I think she does Kagari’s type of character well, she was Chihaya’s seiyuu in Chihayafuru for example, she also does a young boy in Aikatsu. As you can see she has quite the range and I am pretty sure we will see her more in the near future.

Takamiya Honoka on the other hand is less special. Or well, he was less special, but he grows. After each episode he gets a little more interesting and a little deeper. This was a very well written character, even if I didn’t like him much. He is voiced by Kobayashi Yusuke, Takamiya was his first major role and you can hear him now in Selector Infected Wixoss. He doesn’t have a very special voice, or if he has he hasn’t shown it yet, but he isn’t a bad seiyuu and it worked well with Takamiya.

The cast of this anime had a lot of rather unknown or new seiyuu, which is very nice, as well as big names like Noto Mamiko or Miyuki Sawashiro or Kugimiya Rie.

I still don’t recommend Witchcraft Works. It was a bit entertaining but not enough to be memorable.
