Go for Broke: Mushibugyou

Go4Broke_008 My, my, it’s cold but there still is no snow. Where is the snow? (So I can have an excuse to miss work…) But I suppose you’re more interested in Mushibugyou. Or not. It tells the story of the Insect Ministry. Its duty is to protect Edo from the evil insects that try to destroy it. One day, a new member, Tsukishima Jinbei, appears and the new guy appears to be quite entertaining. mushibugyou

To be completely honest with you, I would not want to watch something with such a summary since it does not seem interesting at all. I also think this is a logical choice, the choice I would have made if the whole thing did not take place in Edo and feature samurais.

The thing that made me want to watch more at the beginning definitely was not the story, it was the characters.

The main one, Jinbei, seems a little less stupid than normal protagonists. He even seems to use his head, sometimes. But the thing I really liked about him was his use of his heart. In most cases he followed his heart instead of following his head and that was kind of touching. I do not think it’s ever happened before that I found that kind of main character touching so I thought it might be worth watching if he was like that. He actually kept on being as touching as he was at the beginning, he also grew stronger with each episode, as expected.

In the end, he did not really change and throughout the course of the series (which is 26 episodes, by the way) it became a bit boring to watch him.

The other members of his team were not anything special when it came to personality. Not one of them triggered a fangirlism attack in me, not even the villain. So, while the characters were properly introduced (I actually really liked the first few episodes when the main gang was introduced) and were properly developed throughout the course of the series, I cannot say they were the highlight of the series. Not even the Insect Magistrate which was probably the character the focus was the most on.

As far as Mushibugyou’s plot is concerned, it was not anything special either. Insects wanted to destroy Edo. Half-insects wanted to destroy Edo. Even evil organization were trying to destroy Edo. And the Insect Ministry destroyed them all. You hardly get more typical when it comes to plot.

I have found a few seiyuu I like, like KENN as Jinbei, it changed from the usual Hibito. Or Mamo-chan, I never tire of listening to him.

A special mention for the voice of the big bulky guy though.

To sum it up, I do not think you should watch Mushibugyou. It was entertaining but many anime are more entertaining. It was nice, but you can find nicer.
