Go for Broke: Miss Monochrome

I tripped on my own feet and now my back hurts like hell, which is something that could never happen to Miss Monochrome.

More seriously though, this anime is about an idol named Miss Monochrome (you did not expect that one did you?) and about her path to super idol hood. Now there is a catch, Miss Monochrome is an android.

Miss Monochrome
  1. I am weak when it comes to idol stuff (and there has been more and more of those lately) so obviously I would watch something like Miss Monochrome.
  2. Second reason why I needed to check this is that she is basically a representation of Horie Yui drawn by herself. And, while Horie Yui definitely has no future as a character designer, she is a good seiyuu and she sings well. Or at the very least I like her voice.
  3. Third reason why I watched is another simple one, Miss Monochrome is a short, and shorts are good.

So if I had to use only one word to describe the plot of this anime it would be: surprising.

Miss Monochrome was nothing like I expected it to be. Miss Monochrome was totally nuts.

You see, it seems normal at first. Stuff happens at the same time Miss Monochrome really decides to pursue her idol path and then we learn more things about what really happened and we realize that it has been going backwards.

I quite liked the plot twist(s) in this. It ended and started exactly as expected, more or less, but what was in-between was out of this world. Literally. It somehow took the normal idol anime, mixed the usual parts and put them in a completely different order. It was pretty fun.

The anime did something well: it kept the numbers of characters to a minimum. A short cannot introduce everyone properly, nor develop them properly and Miss Monochrome is sadly the same, even with only four characters.

On the other hand, it is also pretty hard to actually develop the character of an android. They could have done a little bit more efforts about Kikuko and mostly Maneo-manager.  That guy stayed a complete mystery to me from the very start to the very end of that anime. Actually, they could have made an effort on everyone, and there were not many character, really.

My greatest disappointment was that Horie’s voice was auto-tuned from start to finish. I do understand it was consistent with the story but it still was not exactly nice to the ears.

I have absolutely no idea why I enjoyed Miss Monochrome. Maybe because it was just not taking itself seriously. And maybe because it was an idol anime that was not completely like the others.

Recommended to people who like idol stuff, Horie Yui and weird humor. I did have a great time but it definitely is not a must-watch.
