It is not that easy to describe Kyoukai no Kanata but I shall try.

In this world, there exists strange creatures born from the dark feelings of humans. These creatures are named youmu and some people are making a living killing them and selling their remains. Our hero is named Akihito and is a half youmu, he also happens to be immortal. One day, he meets the Spirit Warrior Mirai and she tries to kill him again and again and again.

kyoukai no kanata

I am at a loss at what to say actually. Because the plot ended up to be completely different from what it was supposed to be. I got into it thinking I’d see something that resembled a fantasy shounen and ended up seeing a shounen-like romance.

In a way, it was clever. In a way, it was awesome.

The thing is, the romance part was not exactly the most exciting thing ever. At the very least it was believable, a bit weird, but what else could be a romance between two weird people? In short, they fit well together, or at least that is what I thought.

As for the whole story of chasing youmu and saving the world, yes, again, well I do not think it was anything really special either. So many young teens saved the world already (I wonder how many times it has been), you definitely cannot say the plot is anything special. I did like the whole setting though, but you know you definitely get me whenever the supernatural is involved, especially since the youmu were completely new to me. That was the thing I liked best.

In the end, the thing I can say about the plot is that it definitely movedtoo fast. Many things were happening, many characters were features. It felt awfully fast but at the same time when you think back on it, not many things actually happened. That felt quite strange.

As such, you can guess that I did not think the main asset of Kyoukai no Kanata was its plot, definitely not.

Usually KyoAni’s forte is their characters, and once again they were what I liked best.

The only problem I had is that there were so many that they just could not be all developed properly, that is the saddest thing. On the other hand, they spent a great deal of time on some characters development and I seriously do not understand why.

Again, as usual, I cannot say I really fell in love with the main characters. They were interesting, this is a thing I cannot deny, but they did not feel special at all.

Mirai and Akihito are both lonely people, they both suffered, they are both weird, but in the end, the emphasis is put on their awesome powers and that’s about it.

I wish more focus was made on the Izumi family, these guys have so many secrets that it is a shame they did not reveal more of them. That, and I have to admit that Hiroomi was my favorite character. I did not even mind his obvious sister complex, because I honestly think it was all an act. In short, he needed more screen time.

Have I ever mentioned how much in love I was with Akihito’s seiyuu? I do not think I could ever stop talking about how much I love Kenn. I like his voice, I like his voice quite a lot. I cannot say he is talented as he still more or less have the same kind of role but I still love him a lot. Second favorite seiyuu in this anime is Tatsuhisa Suzuki, Hiroomi’s seiyuu, I already talked about him last week so you can see how good he is. His voice is not very recognizable, it is quite discreet but that also means he can voice anyone and that means he is talented. I cannot say much more, Risa Taneda, Mirai’s seiyuu, is still quite new in the industry so I cannot say a lot about her. For now I’m curious.

I am not sure I can say anything more on this anime, I do not really think it is worth seeing either. It is entertaining but is nothing special at all.
