Go for Broke: Kamisama No Inai Nichiyoubi

Go4Broke_008In this story, one day, god decided to take a vacation and disappeared. As such you cannot die anymore no matter how hurt you are, but no one is born either. Only gravekeepers have the power to bury you and make your death permanent. We follow Ai, as she goes through life after the death of her mother and her becoming a gravekeeper.

The story starts simply enough, a young cute girl meets a cute less-young person. Except that this person is “murdering” everyone in the village. Since everyone is dead, our cute young girl has no reason anymore to stay there so she follows the mysterious man and starts traveling.

Now, I have absolutely NO idea what the plot was supposed to be.

I mean, there has been a few stories in this series but I still have no idea about what it was supposed to be about. Let’s just say it was a metaphorical story about a journey that is both physical and philosophical.

(I think I just said something deep.)

I am not saying that it was not entertaining because it was…in a way. I have a thing for anime like that. Traveling is cool, it is a great way to meet new people and have a lot of adventures.

The thing I am saying is that it lacked a red thread for the series to construct itself around.

Taken independently the little stories were pretty nice, they were cute and dark at the same time, they were even interesting. But I still failed to see what was the thing that brought them together.

I thus cannot really say that I have found that plot to be ground-breaking.

The worse part in this really might be the fact that I still do not understand how this world works even after I finished the anime. I get that there is no god anymore and that no one can die and no one can be born but that still does not explain everything. Instead of having only one world, it seems like this anime has several and that makes it even harder to follow. Interesting, yes maybe, but also very hard to get, especially since it was not the clearer thing at the beginning.

I also do not think I can say anything special on the characters.

Our main heroine is a typical heroine. She is sad, then finds the will to get on living and then travels and finds friends and herself. The expected character development, even though to be honest she does not change much.

I like Humbert a lot better, even though I do not think I understand his personality, nor do I understand his motives or him at all, he probably was my favorite.

The other boy, Alice, a kind little thing whose back story was a bit too complicated in the midst of already complicated things. That problem was a bit too important for me to fully like this character.

Actually, everyone has issues in the way they are written. Even the seiyuu performance was average.

Now I think about it, everything has issues in this anime, and that is quite a shame because it was a good idea at first. It was not initially on my list, I do not know how it managed to stay on enough time for me to finish it but I surely do not recommend it.
