It’s the start of a new life for Banri Tada: he has left his hometown to study and is now living alone. On the day of the opening ceremony he finds himself completely lost as he tries to locate his building. Fortunately he meets Mitsuo, a boy who studies the same thing he does. Unfortunately, he also meets Kaga Koko, Mitsuo’s childhood friend who is a bit violent and has stalking tendencies.

As you can more or less guess, Golden Time is a slice of life centered around a group of university students. All of them have distinctive characteristics and all of them are a bit strange. To be honest, I found Golden Time to be a bit different from everything I have seen before, mostly because it felt a lot less natural. It was probably on purpose but even if it was, it wasn’t very well done. In fact, everything felt a bit fake in Golden Time, both the relationships and the characters. I can understand for Banri — you see Banri has amnesia, he has had an accident before leaving for university and cannot remember anything before that. So, sometimes, the ghost of his past self appears. And, sometimes, he can be confused. You would definitely expect such an event to have a lasting effect on the one who has been victim to it. I thus found it logical for Banri to be unnatural. He was voiced by Furukawa Makoto who didn’t do his job very well. Banri sounded more or less always the same, you couldn’t hear a lot of emotions from his voice and it didn’t help the whole unnatural feeling I got from this anime. The others are really too much though. You see, everyone has exaggerated character traits and, while it does work in other series, it didn’t work very well in this anime. If we take for example Mitsuo, he feels like an overgrown child, all of his reactions feel like the ones of a child. It could have been fun, but it wasn’t because the settings in which he acted like that weren’t funny in the first place. While I didn’t like Banri, I didn’t like Mitsuo either. He was voiced by Ishikawa Kaito who is doing Tobio Kageyama in Haikyuu!! and who I have always loved before but even he couldn’t save Mitsuo. The girls weren’t exactly my cup of tea either. Koko, while voiced by Horie Yui, sounded and was annoying. She was completely out of this world, it is explained in the anime why and how but even so, I couldn’t take her seriously as a character. I don’t know what they tried to do with Koko but I didn’t find her endearing, nor did I find her interesting, she was annoying and conceited and I couldn’t stand her. I couldn’t like Linda either, she might have been the character that felt the most natural to me throughout the series but she still was a coward. Do I need to mention that nothing could save this anime? Its characters were, at best, not interesting, at worse, completely annoying. Its story, well, it felt like it didn’t really have any story at all, it was mostly about people struggling with their love lives and I’m known to have a low tolerance for this kind of things. As a comedy, it also failed as I don’t think I’ve even come close to smile. I should have dropped it. I obviously don’t recommend it. The following two tabs change content below.
