I’m so excited for the new season! You can’t believe it. To prepare properly I obviously have to review some anime that have just finished don’t I?
Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince has a very simple plot. It is pretty much like any other mecha series you can find anywhere. The future of the human species rests in the hands of a team of young and talented people. Thankfully these young people are piloting huge powerful machines that will help them fight the bad guys. Hopefully.
In all honesty, I usually love mecha anime, they are almost never anything special but sometimes, very rarely, you find a gem. Which wasn’t
Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince.
Sadly it stayed throughout the whole course of the series an average mecha, no more, no less.
The thing that had driven me to watch beyond the first few episodes was the characters. I found these guys very endearing and their school life seemed like fun to me. The main one, Izuru was an otaku, always drawing bad manga and completely out of things. The big brother figure of the group seemed like the only reliable guy of the team. The other guy was a weapon otaku who took nothing seriously. The team even had two girls, for me, something like that is always a plus. Kei always tried to keep her cool character and tried hard to act like a girl, except it always failed. And the last one seemed to fall in love with everyone and their mothers, or rather their fathers, well you see what I mean.
I thought that these guys put together between school life and saving humanity would make for an entertaining series to follow. Anyone would think that after this kind of introduction, but not really. For one, it seemed that their characters barely underwent any change after everything they’ve been through. It felt very unreal to me and somehow the series suffered from it. Real character development only seemed to happen during the very last episodes.
The bad guys appeared so little and were given so little personality that they did not grow on me. It is quite sad, I always like bad guys, but on the other hand, for once it showed that it still is possible to find real detestable bad guys in anime nowadays and it is worth noting.
As for plot, what can I say? As I said before
Majestic Prince is a very basic mecha anime. They spent so much time introducing their school life that I really thought they would put more emphasis on it, but after a few episodes they go away and we never hear of that school again, unless they needed to save it. I was curious about that school. I’m disappointed.
Some parts are unnecessary complicated. Sure it made the whole thing a bit more interesting but it didn’t really affect the whole anime. The plot parts were treated a bit like a bonus between the action scenes and space fights. I found that a bit sad. It felt like they could have done a lot better than they did.
The whole series felt like that, it could have been done a lot better. I wouldn’t exactly advise against watching it because it was not exactly boring, but I would not recommend it either.
