Go for Broke: Free — Iwatobi Swim Club

Posted on the 03 December 2013 by Kaminomi @OrganizationASG

Go4Broke_008Today, I present you with an early Christmas gift for the ladies. Yup. I am that kind. Sometimes.

Surprisingly, Free! Iwatobi Swim Club is an anime about swimming. And friendship. It always is about friendship.

Basically, Haruka and his friends were a team back in elementary school, but things happened and they only reunited in high school but without Rin. They then try to re-establish the swimming club to realize their dream of swimming together again like they did in the past.

If you did not hear about Free before, there is a high chance that you were living in another planet. I mean, our dear KyoAni that has always been about cute girls suddenly decided to make an anime about half-naked guys. Everyone was in shock even before the anime was actually announced. That being said, I was wary.

But then I started watching the first episode and instead of being weary I was rather happy. The first thing I thought was that it was rather pretty.

The second thing I thought was that it was not so boring as I expected.

Then again, I cannot say that the plot was ground breaking. It is after all a sports anime: people swim and train and want to win a competition. We follow them as they go through this. It is honestly nothing special at all. Except everyone is just too cute and that is why it is just that awesome.

If there is something that KyoAni can do well, it is characters. And they did so in Free.

Everyone has their own little something that makes them special and endearing. Haruka is one of the cutest tennen I have ever seen, he seems clueless but is in fact very caring, so it was interesting and fun to see how he develops through the series.

Makoto, who was probably my favorite is more the big brother type and tries hard to care about everyone, sometimes forgetting himself in the process. It was nice seeing him getting more conscious of his own self. And he had the best abs. Abs are good. I like abs.

Nagisa is typically the annoying and hyper kind of character I usually hate and this time somehow I did not. I do not really know why, maybe because he was also doing things out of consideration.

Rei might be probably the one I liked less, mainly because of his seiyuu (Daisuke Hirakawa), I just cannot stand his voice. As a character he is not so bad. Pretty cute even, I am usually kind but I honestly do not think I would have sacrificed myself like he did in this series. He probably was the most surprising character of the show.

Rin was not a character I thought I would like at the beginning. Or rather said, I liked him at the beginning, then disliked him, and then liked him again. He might have been the most interesting character for me in this series because I felt he was the most human of them all and I found that very endearing. Not my favorite, definitely not, but a close second.

Last but not least I felt that I should mention Gou, Rin’s sister, the manager of the Iwatobi Swim Club. Gou has one peculiarity: she has a fetish for muscles and her name is a male name. She’s just one of the most adorable little things I have ever seen.

I also think that I should mention the wonderful seiyuu that have worked on this series. Except for Rei’s but that is only my personal opinion, I just cannot stand his voice.

In short, I have really enjoyed myself while watching this, so I recommend it.
