Go for Broke: Diabolik Lovers

Go4Broke_008 What is there left to say on Diabolik Lovers? Back when it first aired it already was infamous for having vampire characters who enjoyed torturing Yui, their prey, and sexually assaulting her several times per episode.

Yet, it also had a plot. Something about Yui’s father having something to do with her being sent to live with the family of vampires and her being a “sacrificial bride”. Something like that.

As I said in the summary, this anime actually has a plot. Something will actually happen! (Beyond blood sucking I mean.)

What it is exactly I will not say because it is so shocking that this actually has plot that I would not want to spoil your enjoyment.

All I can say is that it is not a good plot. I am not sure I actually got everything. It all felt to me like they decided to add it at the last-minute because they did not have enough time to finish the plot line they had started.

In short, the plot they added at the last-minute was indeed finished, how I am not sure. I am not sure how it came to be either because we miss some important elements to get everything properly. But on the other hand, it left a sour taste of unfinished in my mouth. I have never played the game, I have never listened to the drama CDs either so I do not think it will ever get any kind of closure. Unless they do a second season but I am not sure if I want one.

There is this unfinished taste but there is also that which plagues nearly every otome game adaptation out there and that is the fact that no one gets her in the end. They leaned heavily toward one ending but never really quite went there and it really did not please me at all. Then again, I should have expected it considering how it started.

As far as characters are concerned, no one really struck me as special. They had little screen time when I think about it, that may be a reason.

The only one of the boys who actually got some was Ayato and as such he became my favorite but that is only because it did not feel like I had a choice. I barely knew enough of the others to remember their name. Though they did get a proper introductory episode they all felt bland.

And it obviously is the same for Yui. She tries to rebel at first but she quickly becomes a puppet and as such the anime quickly becomes boring. Which is to be expected, she is after all the main protagonist of something that has been adapted from an otome game.

Somehow, out of all the seiyuu’s performances, I have to praise Yui’s the most. I have never heard of Rie Suegara before and I would not mind hearing her somewhere else. As for the boys, well, it has Daisuke Hirakawa who I really do not like. It also has Kondo Takashi who I am always happy to hear since he rarely does anime anymore. Yuuki Kajias Kanato did a wonderful job at being scary even though I’m honestly starting to have a problem with him. He’s seriously everywhere and I am rather indifferent toward him. I can’t stop before mentioning Hikaru Midorikawa and Kousuke Toriumi, who are always good and who I miss greatly. And, last but not least, Katsuyuki Konishi who I am always glad to hear in any kind of role he might land. In the end though, the seiyuu were not enough to save this anime. Nothing is enough to save this anime.

I should have known when I started but there is no way I would ever recommend this to someone. It is beyond saving. Too bad because the premises were interesting. I am a sucker for vampires after all…
