A fire broke out at work today. I thought talking about Coppelion was fitting.

Despite its name that sounds like a nice and very fluffy flower, Coppelion is set in a post-apocalyptic world. We follow the adventures of “creatures” named Coppelion whose DNA has been altered to be able to survive in an environment of high radiation.
Coppelion Coppelion

I was overjoyed when I saw that. This is another kind of show I am very weak toward. I only had great hopes when I heard about Coppelion. I mean, high school girl warriors genetically modified in a post-nuclear apocalypse world, what is there not to love?

…And then my hopes were crushed.

To be fair, the first episode was nice. Very nice. I really liked looking at these girls while apparently normal while they normally go through a very not normal world. I liked the contrast, quite a lot actually. Even if we later get more insight of how not normal the girls are. It was supposed to be about those three girls, members of the rescue team, whose objective was to save people who were left behind. I will not mention anything about the time it took the government to actually move. I am not sure I should mention anything concerning the other teams as I honestly do not really understand the point of them if everyone has gotten the same training. Anyway. It was supposed to be about them rescuing people and then I got a weird mix between actual rescue, chasing against people dumping nuclear waste wherever and fight against comrades Coppelion. For no reason except that they wanted to. Which is a reason as great as any but at the same time, it felt like a waste. It felt like a waste because I think that more world building would have been so much better. We know practically nothing of the outside world; all we know is that Coppelion are actually from the military and we know their commander and we know a bit of the politics behind everything but that’s about it.And that is probably my biggest disappointment. (That and the fact that this whole rescue thing was dragging on and was pretty boring. The first two rescue missions were not very necessary. In the end, I think it was trying to cram too many things in a too little space and then it forgot about the rest.) In the end, the only thing that was really developed is the characters. And I am pretty sure there were too many. I did not pay a lot of attention to the series in the first place so, with this many characters, I was sure to forget some. And I did. So, our main three girls main charm points is that they are the good guys. Our main boy’s charming point is that he is a good guy despite him trying to kill people. Also, he is in love with Ibara who is completely oblivious. I actually liked that, it gave a very strange sense of normalcy to the whole thing. Again, I liked the contrast. As for the two main bad girls, they were interesting in their own rights, the anime just did not do them justice. That is sad. I liked bad guys. And, the people rescued, were forgettable. Except the robot. I actually only remember the robot. Which is quite sad. The art style was weird but bearable, it was nice looking at something else for once. I forgot about the music and the seiyuu were not very good. Sorry KanaHana but Coppelion did not make you shine, nor did you make it shine.Honestly a big disappointment on my part. Not recommending it.
