Go For Broke

Dear friends. Today is a very sad day.

Today is the day you will read the last edition of my Go for Broke column. The two years (or was it more?) we spent together and I annoyed you with my columns ever week, babbling about every anime I have watched, were wonderful.

But today everything has come to an end. Today I have to say good bye.

….Today I also have something to tell you: I’LL BE BACK!! MWAHAHA

Expect the unexpected (or not) very soon! See ya!

(In the meantime you can still read me over at Crunchyroll.fr …)

As for Chuunibyou, you probably already heard of the two seasons of the series named Chuunibyou demo Koi ga shitai, namely because Chuunibyou has become quite common. Anyway, Chuunibyou is an anime about a young girl named Rika who suffers from the 8th grade syndrome, a very dangerous illness that makes her believe she’s a magician. For better or for worse she has found comrades in arms in her delusions and now she is even seriously seeing Togashi. But how will the relationship between the innocent chuunibyou-infected Rika and her beloved Dark Flame Master develop?

Go for Broke: Chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai renI feel a bit bad for describing it like that but that’s pretty much all there is to this second season. The first one was great, awesome even, I really, really liked the exploration of Rika’s thoughts and her reasons for having chuunibyou and how Togashi and everyone made efforts to look past her cheerful self.

And then this second season happened.

Honestly, I have nothing against love stories, when they’re well done. But I thought it was a bit too much. I was happy when they announced this second season but I was disappointed. It felt like I didn’t get half as much as what I wanted and, in the end, it was a bit boring.

Introducing a new character wasn’t a bad idea, especially since she had a history with Togashi but at the same time, all it managed to create was a very generic love triangle. All the story of this second season managed to do was to be generic and it felt forced. Of course some episodes were great and all but most of the time I nearly wished they hadn’t bothered with making such a weak season.

The good things about Chuunibyou were, of course, the characters, even though they somehow were a bit less interesting since last time.

Togashi is a bit more clueless. That’s cute, but I was used to someone with more backbones, I wanted to see him be more aggressive and decide things by himself for the sake of he and Rika. But he wasn’t, I was disappointed in him. Not even his Dark Flame Master persona nor the fact he is voiced by Jun Fukuyama could save him, which is quite the performance considering that he is one of my favorite seiyuu of all times.

Rika didn’t change a lot since the first season, if anything she too was even more shy than before. I related a lot to her struggles and everything in the first season but it wasn’t just the same. She had less presence, though her seiyuu Uchida Maaya did a good job.

Everyone else remained the same as ever, but we saw the appearance of Satone Shichimiya, another Chuunibyou infected girl who also happens to live upstairs from Togashi (and Rikka). She is everything Rika was in the first season, it didn’t look like they spent a lot of time on making her character up. Nothing special to see here either. It was the first time I only heard her seiyuu, Nagatsuma Jun, once before, in Tamako Market. Again nothing ground breaking here either.

In short, this second season was pretty bad, you can definitely skip it without second thoughts. Just make sure you still watch the first season, that one was pretty good.
