Gluten Free Restaurant Review: Uno Pizzeria & Grill

By Calvin Eaton @glutenfreechef5

I’ll admit it. This winter has me down. It’s no secret that me+ winter do not belong together and the incessant freeze has my fibro unendingly flared, increased my pain, and decreased my positivity. Fortunately my best friend dragged me out of the house last weekend for a much needed night out. The place of choice was his favorite restaurant Uno Pizzeria and Grill. Not my first choice but I willingly obliged.

You see my last trip to Uno in late 2012 left me feeling more than underwhelmed. A paltry barely there gluten free menu left me feeling…. what’s the word? Hungry and I vowed never to return. That is until last weekend’s visit where I was elated and pleasantly surprised to find a revamped menu that featured a whole page dedicated to a “real gluten free selection”. Yes real food like steaks, chicken, seafood, burgers, beer, (Yes Beer!) and thin crust pizza. Yes that’s right| Pizza.

Uno's Thin Crust Pizza

Uno finally got the memo and created a section for us. One page may not seem like a lot but in this case a little goes a long way especially when you are coming from generic green salads and water. Our waitress was knowledgeable and more than accommodating answering all of my questions (honestly) might I add and recommending the delish thin crust styled pizza.

Yes they now have real pizza. On real thin crust. That can be topped with plain cheese, veggies, or pepperoni. I was more than thrilled and ever happier when my thin crust pizza came out light, crispy and flavorful. No soggy crust to mention. It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to truly enjoy a meal out and being able to eat well and socialize especially during a “down moment” was just what I needed.

So kudos to Uno for finally getting it right and understanding that a little thought, fresh ingredients, and properly trained staff means more than just a meal for those who cannot tolerant wheat. Often times it is our saving grace. You have regained a customer in me.
