Giuliana Rancic, E! News Correspondent, stirred controversy last week when she told Us Weekly that the secret to her marriage is that she puts her marriage as a greater priority than her child.
Giuliana says:
“We’re husband and wife, but we’re also best friends, and it’s funny because a lot of people, when they have kids, they put the baby first, and the marriage second. That works for some people. For us, I find, we put our marriage first and our child second, because the best thing we can do for him is have a strong marriage.”
Giuliana and Bill Rancic (most famous for winning the inaugural season of “The Apprentice”) welcomed their first child, Edward “Duke” Rancic, last August. Their long journey was chronicled in their hit Style Network reality show (of which I watch because I am a fan of the two of them). Giuliana had a very hard time getting pregnant. During her third attempt with in vitro fertilization she was told to get a mandatory mammogram. Doctors soon discovered that she had breast cancer.
Giuliana ended up deciding to have a double mastectomy. Because of the risk of cancer recurring if she were to try to have a baby again, the couple decided to have a gestational carrier. A gestational carrier is when another woman carries the embryo of the couple. The embryo has the genetic makeup of the two parents.
Giuliana called “Duke” her miracle baby because she really does feel that he saved her life. Her comments caused outrage amongst some mommy bloggers. They interpreted her comments as saying that she loves her husband more than her son or that she somehow doesn’t care for her son.I think the controversy is blown out of proportion. I think Giuliana might have a good point. She said that she thinks that having a great marriage is the best thing she can do for her child. I agree with her. So many times parents focus solely on their children that they forget their partners. A strong marriage, or relationship for that matter, is a great foundation for raising a child. Obviously it is ideal and doesn’t always happen but I don’t see what all the fuss is about.
What do you think?
Which is your first priority? You spouse/partner or your child/children?
