Imogene a failed New York playwright must figure out how to get her life back on track after everything once and for all falls apart. After a “suicide” attempt she must stay with her mother in New Jersey for a while!
I have to admit that I did go into this film hoping Wiig was going to pull off a second Bridesmaids type film and it was going to be just as funny. (Yes I loved and still loved Bridesmaids). But it does not have the same effect as that film, while Wiig’s character is very similar, actually make that pretty much the identical character. Loses everything and heads towards rock bottom and ends up back with her mother.
The best thing about her mother in this film is that Annette Bening takes on the role. No where near her best performance but ends up for a good scene towards the end of the film, when the mother daughter relationship goes in a different direction. That is one of the main relationships we get to think about during this film. I guess it helped show as well that your mother is always right and looks out for you no matter how you think back about things to your childhood. As shown very well in this film, we get a chance to understand why Zelda done certain things for her children.
For a comedy, it doesn’t have you laughing constantly but I am sure you will snigger a couple of times at some of the tongue in cheek jokes and little comments that you would just not want to hear from your mother. It really is a film aimed towards us women and I cannot imagine many men even going to see this one! It just shows that no matter where you find yourself in life sometimes you just have to let your hair down and party, something else this film shows. I am sure we have all been in that situation and a night out with friends is always the answer.
While this is by no means ground breaking or brilliant, it does its best to try to be Bridesmaids but comes up very short of that. Actually nowhere near really, the cast is pretty impressive though and that keeps you going through some parts. It did take a couple of turns which were unexpected and could have been missed out. However, it does have a little twist which I actually found to be one of the best parts of the film as I really was not expecting it.
I did struggle on which year to put with this film as IMDb has it as 2012, with it premiering at film festivals last year but not making it to a cinematic release. It came out in the UK today but has not had a full US release just limited back in July. I guess that tells you something about this film if it did not get a proper release in the US and going straight to DVD in some countries. Overall, a little disappointing as have been wanting to see it for a while.
