Carol and Nancy said their beloved sister had been struggling with depression for “a few years” and attempted to take her own life this Sunday. She was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately could not be revived from her coma.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Lee’s singing career, during which time she rose to international fame with her R&B and Western hip hop infused sounds. Born in Hong Kong and raised in San Francisco, Lee’s story is one of humble beginnings – a vacation meant to help her forget about an accident involving her mother’s car led to her discovering a passion for singing and entering a contest. From there, she went on to become an international superstar who left an indelible mark on both Asian and American pop culture. Her death has left many fans heartbroken, sending shockwaves around the world. May she rest in peace.
Lee’s sisters, Carol and Nancy, paid tribute to their late sister CoCo in a heartfelt Instagram and Facebook post. A well-known figure in the international music scene, CoCo made her mark over the past 29 years with her top-selling songs, thrilling live performances, and relentless efforts to pioneer a new world of opportunity for Chinese singers into the global music industry.
“As a family of CoCo, we are very grateful and honored to have such an excellent and outstanding sister” the post read. “We are thankful to God for giving us such a kind angel. We know now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression; we trust God has her best interest looked after! Now, our greatest responsibility is to take good care of our elderly mother. I hope everyone will pray for this poor old lady & allow us time & privacy in healing.”
