(New York) The lawyers of Ghislaine Maxwell, former collaborator of the financier Jeffrey Epstein arrested on July 2, asked that she be released on bail of 5 million dollars and a house arrest, ensuring that she would not seek to escape prosecution for trafficking minors brought against her.

In a document registered Friday with the federal court of Manhattan, his lawyers assure that this used to the jetset – born in France, educated in England before settling in the United States in 1991 – has no reason to flee abroad.

They assure that many of her relatives are in the United States and not abroad, and that she had not been discreet since the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein in July 2019 only to escape the media and protect themselves, after having received in particular “death threats”.

Lawyers for the daughter of ex-British media mogul Robert Maxwell say that with her clean criminal record, she poses no “extreme risk of flight”, contrary to what prosecutors in Manhattan say who demand their continued detention.

The defense also highlights the risks of infection with the new coronavirus if it were to remain imprisoned.

Ghislaine Maxwell, 58 years old, was charged with “helping, facilitating and contributing to the sexual assaults on minors of Jeffrey Epstein”, from 1994 to 1997.

She would have recruited for the New York financier, found dead in prison in August 2019, young penniless adolescents aged 14 years and over. She is said to have participated directly in the attacks, and risks up to 35 years in prison if convicted.

After her arrest in New Hampshire, she was transferred Monday to Brooklyn Federal Prison, pending the hearing which will decide on her possible detention, which will take place by teleconference on 14 July.
