Get Better Connected on LinkedIn

Posted on the 09 March 2015 by Andreaantal @andreaeantal

Depending on what your goals are for using LinkedIn, you could be missing out on some valuable opportunities to connect with a worthy network.

Are you using it like your Twitter account - following and accepting follows from anyone and everyone; or are you more selective about who you let into your social circle like your Facebook account?

The important question to ask yourself is: "Does quality trump quantity when building my LinkedIn network?"

If you're still a bit flippant about how influential LinkedIn actually is, here's an infographic created by Linkedprofilewriter.org that displays some cool factoids that might make you think twice:

Get better connected on LinkedIn

Pretty impressive, huh? Now it's time to start making LinkedIn work better for you.

Personalize your invitation

Instead of the generic "I'd like to connect with you" message, customize a message that explains clearly why you want to connect. Here's an example you're welcome to use:

After reviewing your profile, I'd like to connect with you and discuss possible collaborations that could be mutually beneficial.
Target your connections

Sometimes, more is not merrier. Use a proactive approach to build your core target market by searching and connecting with relevant individuals. Decide what your short and longer term objectives are, and who can help you achieve them?

Take the time for others who take the time

Chances are, when someone takes the time to maintain their profile and use the system regularly, they are more likely to have similar goals. Before you extend an invitation, try to check off 2 out of the following 3 questions:

  1. Do they have a profile picture?
  2. Is more than 50% of their profile information completed?
  3. Do they have more than 150 connections?

By following these 3 guidelines, you'll be more likely to achieve more qualitative results that you can market to later on. As the saying goes, your network is your net worth!
