Speaking of the protests on Friday, New York mayor Bill de Blasio said that while some people showed up to protest peacefully, others went "to incite violence."

The mayor said the New York City police department had known "horrible and vile things" and added that "tremendous violence ... will not last."

De Blasio said that some protesters tried "to harm the police and that they did it. They wanted to attack the police vehicles and they did, they wanted to attack the police stations".

"We will not accept this," said the mayor.

However, de Blasio did not tolerate police actions against peaceful demonstrators and said that those elected during the demonstrations had been sprayed with pepper.

"It is unacceptable and we must understand exactly why it happened and there must be a responsibility," he said.

"It is false in every way, but it also makes us back off," he added. "Last night was a difficult and complex situation." It launches an independent review of Friday's events.

The NYPD is obliged to keep the peace, protect everyone and avoid anything that may allow further violence, said de Blasio.

"We have seen videos that do not reflect the philosophy of this city, the values of this city, the values of this administration, do not reflect the values of the NYPD," he added.
