Rodney King's daughter Lora King, whose violent beatings by white police sparked the Los Angeles riots 20 years ago, spoke on Wednesday of her father's case and the death of George Floyd.
When asked if she thought we were going to see justice for Floyd's death, she replied, "I don't want to be negative, but no."
"I still don't feel like the officers involved in my father's beatings - I don't think we have justice for them," she said. "None of them have been sentenced to long-term sentences ... One of them is employed, I believe, by the department of Santa Monica or the department of Culver City. Which is very depressing for me. Because that means he went back to work, which means someone else is suffering now because I'm sure he didn't learn because I'm sure he didn't not been sentenced to a long term sentence. "
A certain context: In 1991 Rodney King was severely beaten by LAPD officers after a high-speed chase in Los Angeles County.
A video of the beatings, taken by a witness, shows that King was hit by police batons more than 50 times. More than 20 officers were present, most of them from LAPD. King suffered 11 broken bones and other injuries as a result of the beatings.
Four police officers were charged, but were acquitted - and the black Los Angeles broke out in outrage. The riots that followed left more than 50 dead and $ 1 billion in property damage.
Lora on the death of George Floyd: Lora King was about the same age as George Floyd's daughter during the beatings and riots.
King said what happened to his father was "something I live with everyday. And it is something that (George Floyd's daughter) will unfortunately live with everyday. I don't wish that on anyone . "
"You know, that night, my father was beaten. I lost a part of him but I didn't lose him, luckily, by the grace of God ... as far as that night was concerned , I had to kiss my father afterwards even though he's never been the same. She'll never have this opportunity. And for me, it's - it's disgusting, "she said.
