Mrs Foodie has been geocaching since 2006 and bullied Mr Foodie into it (he secretly enjoys it!) So what is it?
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Using these devices, participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache hidden at that location.
To play along you will need to register at Geocaching.com and create a membership (basic is free). Then visit the Hide & Seek a Cache page, enter your post code and search. Choose a geocache that you like the sound of, or at a level that you a confident with (there are various difficulties of caches). Enter the co-ordinates into your GPS device and go find!
You can also use the Geocaching App to locate and record your finds. Once you have found your cache, sign the logbook and return the cache to its original location. Log your find online.
The rules of the game are simple.
1. If you take something from the geocache (or “cache”), leave something of equal or greater value.
2. Complete the logbook.
3. Record your find online.
Geocaching is very popular in Europe, and is a fun family activity. We have found some interesting places due to Geocaching – did you know there is a mini wild west village in Edinburgh? Meet ups are common with mass Geocaching events around. There are lots about this year with it being the 15th anniversary of the first geocache being placed.
You can also hide your own cache or have a bug that you leave in cache to travel. We had Fred’s Bug which traveled 6559 miles around Europe from cache to cache.
