Generalitat Not to Rule out a Referendum If Negotiation Fails on Fiscal Pact with Madrid

By Stizzard

The Catalan Home Office Minister Felip Puig, said on Friday that the Government does not rule out a referendum if negotiations with Madrid on the fiscal pact fail and warned that “either we get out of the pact by way of an agreement or by way of democratic radicalism “.

Puig has spoken out and said to RAC1 after the president of the Generalitat Artur Mas made an appeal on Thursday to the Catalan society to support explicitly with a “cry” the fiscal pact as a matter of “country integer” – beyond the Government, political parties or the Parliament.

The minister went on to say that the Catalan executive does not rule out the possibility of holding a consultation on the fiscal pact, but has stated that it is “now on the calendar” because firstly, we must begin the process of negotiations with the Government of Mariano Rajoy.

Puig has stressed, in this regard, that the intention of the Generalitat is to play the “game” of the fiscal pact with “perspective and ambition that we will win.”

“We will achieve our own Catalan Tax/Revenue Office by way of an agreement or because we will build and implement it ourselves. If this constitutes a political conflict, then we will assume responsibility for it,” he said.

The minister, like Artur Mas, has also appealed to the Catalans on 11th September, the National Day of Catalonia, “across the country to express their commitment” to this great “purpose” to allow the Catalan community to manage its resources.
