A close-up view of a modern high-bypass fan section.  This powerplant generates 59,000 lbs of thrust, four of them are required to get the behemoth C-5 aircraft airborne.  A turbofan is essentially a turbojet driving a ducted fan, with both of these contributing to the thrust.  The General Electric CF6 is a family of high-bypass turbofan engines produced by GE Aviation found mostly on airliners but chosen for the modernization of the C-5 Galaxy transports into the C-5M Super Galaxy.  First run in 1971, more than 8,300 of these engines have been produced.
