Big Scary Monsters have been killing it all year with albums from the likes of Cassels, Tricot and Kamikaze Girls all among our favourites of 2017. Now they’ve signed Gender Roles – and the Brighton-based trio are all set to support new labelmate Jamie Lenman (‘Devolver’ is another contender for album of the year) on his big tour early next year.
To whet your appetite for this incredible bill and further releases from Gender Roles, the video for ‘Plastic’ has been unveiled. It’s a three-and-a-half-minute blast of punk that has echoes of Woahnows and early Idlewild. It kicks off with angular, fuzzy guitar hooks and a big drum sound as Tom Bennett delivers observations (with knowing humour) on the ways that people try and fool themselves into playing along as things they are not. He follows this up with some more subtle self-observations: ‘Who locks the door from the inside? Can’t open a window to save my life’. As the song races towards its conclusion, Tom repeats ‘My plastic everything’ with an infectious energy. Gender Roles are another phenomenal addition to the BSM roster.
