The Gardens of the Chateau of Villandry.

Gardens of the Castle of Villandry  is Italian Renaissance style. and it was imposed in France, as in the other European countries in the 16th century, contributing to this the admiration that the French monarchs felt for Italian art. Those hired to hire Italian artists and they acquired works to decorate their palaces and gardens.

This admiration began already in the 15th century with the kings Carlos VIII and Luis XII (1498-1515), continuing with Francisco I (1515-1547), who knew Italy directly, Francisco I after the defeat of the troops of Carlos V formed in Paris and in Fontainebleau an artistic center run by Italian artists. Luefo continues with Henry IV (1589-1610), married to the Florentine Maria de Medici.

The French Renaissance gardens either disappeared or underwent major transformations in the 17th and 18th centuries, so no garden from that time is preserved today. In the Loire Valley there is a garden in the Château de Villandry which, although it was completely destroyed in the 19th century, was rebuilt between 1906 and 1924. This reconstruction was carried out following the preserved engravings of Du Cerceau and by its new owner, the Spanish Joaquin Carvallo. In this way, and next to the medieval chateau and the Renaissance palace, four gardens were rebuilt on the four existing terraces.

First Terrace of Villandry Castle

At the top is the Water Garden, formed by a large pond surrounded by orthogonally structured flowerbeds. This large pond works as a container and distributor of water for the rest of the garden. A high wall, which forms a viewpoint walk, shaded by rows of trees, separates this garden from the other three arranged on lower terraces. Its forehead is adorned with niches.
