Gallup Verifies That 60% Support Legal Same-Sex Marriage
Several major national polls have recently shown that the support for legal same-sex marriage is about six out of every ten Americans. Now another major poll is verifying what those others have shown. It is the latest Gallup Poll -- done between May 6th and 10th of a random national sample of 1,024 adults (with a 5 point margin of error). The chart above shows how support and opposition to same-sex marriage has changed in just the last eleven years.
A minority of about 37% still see this issue as a religious one -- but most Americans are now smarter than that. They understand that this country is ruled by the Constitution -- and that Constitution guarantees all Americans equal rights under the law. They now see same-sex marriage as an equal rights issue.
The Supreme Court heard arguments on this issue (whether state bans on same-sex marriage violate the Constitution), and are currently considering their decision. That decision is expected to be published this summer -- maybe as early as next month (June). I don't see how they can decide anything but that those bans are unconstitutional -- since they decided in Loving that marriage was a constitutional right, and constitutional rights must be applied equally to all citizens.
The chart below, also made from information in that same Gallup Poll, shows the growth of support for legal same-sex marriage among the different political entities in the United States (in the last ten years). Note that support has grown among all three political subdivisions (even those the Republicans still show minority support).
