Funk N Waffles – Best Breakfast in Syracuse, NY

By Kenin Bassart @Constantramble

Waking up in Syracuse, NY I had one thing and one thing only on my mind…breakfast! After a night of beer tasting and exploring the city I woke up famished. Every person in Syracuse seemed to have the same recommendation for a good hearty hangover cure, and that was Funk N Waffles. I was a bit skeptical about this, waffles are not exactly my favorite food, but I am a stickler for following my own advice. Locals know best. With my stomach on empty I headed out to see what all the fuss was about.

Walking into Funk N Waffles I was immediately hit by the smell of deliciousness. Coffee and sweet batter was mixed with fried breakfast meats and fruit. My stomach started a loud conversation and I needed to shut it up. After grabbing a giant coffee I was faced with the unexpected. I had to pick a waffle. I thought I would walk into the restaurant, grab a coffee, order a waffle and be done with my tummy quarrels. I didn’t think making a decision would be so difficult. Funk N Waffles offers both sweet and savory waffles. The choices were endless. If their combos of toppings and fillings were not enough, you can also create your own waffle. Luck for me I had an ace up my sleeve. My husband knows me well and can make a decision for my stomach when my brain fails me. Kenin went up to the counter to place a “mystery order” for me and I sat back sipping coffee and admiring the artwork on the walls.

When Kenin came back with my order it solidified all of the faith that I had placed in my marriage. He came back with this…

All Shook Up - Funk N Waffles

All Shook Up – Lauren Style

the All Shook Up. This is a bacon waffle (the bacon is in the batter) topped with maple syrup and comes with a side of peanut butter to smear all over the beast. The original comes topped with bananas, but I detest bananas, so my doll of a husband had them trade those evil fruit out for strawberries. Kenin also came back with his own waffle. I immediately deemed that one “ours”.

:)
I was ravenous and you can’t put something that looks like this in front of me and expect that you are going to be able to keep my fork out of it.

Jive Turkey Waffle

Jive Turkey Waffle

This is the Jive Turkey. The waffle is made of pure heavenly stuffing and topped with chunks of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and served with a side of cranberry sauce. It was everything I thought it would be. I stabbed him with my fork and was transported to a Thanksgiving night at a huge table with my family. I opened my eyes to see that thankfully, it was just Kenin and myself and I wouldn’t have to share this waffle (which wasn’t mine to begin with) with anyone but my loving husband.
