An artist who is an animal lover hopes to raise PS10,000 through an online art auction in support of animal charities that care for pets of refugees from Ukraine.

Lisa Watkins from Scunthorpe stated that she had received 160 donations to her auction on Facebook.

Two animal charities located in Romania will benefit from the money.

After seeing photos of fleeing Ukraine with many people carrying dogs and cats, she felt the need to act.

Ms. Watkins stated, “We aren’t just helping animals. We are also helping people and the animal family.”

“I have seen only one person carrying their German shepherd dog. The family took turns because it was their last piece of the father.

“It was the final part of those memories. They carried it to the border as they couldn’t lose any family member.”

She said that pets arriving in the country need to be provided with food, water, and shelter.

Charities also assist with paperwork, vaccinations, and sheltering pets that have been left behind while their owners are away.

Ms. Watkins supports One Dog at a Time Rescue UK (60km) and Sava’s Safe Haven (40 miles/60 km) from the Romania/Ukraine border.

She said, “They are charities that I have worked with, adopted, and supported for many decades.”

Alexandra Sava from Sava’s Safe Haven said that she was going to the border daily to help.

“Many people in Ukraine are traveling with their pets and need help with shelter, food transport, crates, vitamins, etc.”
