Fuji-Bell UH-1B Hiyodori (Iroquois)

@ Tokorozawa, Japan

April 2024

Hanging above in the Tokorozawa Aviation Museum is this Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) UH-1B Iroquois. First flown in 1956, more than 16,000 variants of the classic Huey were produced.  Deliveries of these early model UH-1B began in March 1961 with 1,010 “Bravos” going to the US Army. This example is one of 85 built under license in Japan by Fuji Heavy Industries. The Iroquois was originally designated HU-1, hence the Huey nickname, which has remained in common use, despite the official redesignation to UH-1 in 1962.
