‘Saw you hugging all your kids inside, picking up your toys, you cried and I watch you from the kitchen window’ is a statement that sets a scene of quiet devastation – and it’s exactly how Frog open this heartbreaking and poignant song. That they follow it up with the equally affecting ‘I want to call you, I play Nintendo’ is something that could break even the coldest of hearts. Very downbeat in an affecting Daniel Johnston style, the band then wallow about the magic dying before a glockenspiel adds some hope to the proceedings. As the song grows, it becomes more akin to The Antlers and there is a real heartfelt approach as they go on to discuss the arrival of the doctor and nurse. It’s perfect.
The b-side, ‘God’s Tinnitus’, is 54 seconds of noise and distortion delivered below what sounds like a spoken-word confession – think Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. The single is completed by two impressive remixes, including one by Spectral Nights favorite Benjamin Shaw.
