Friendship Day

Best Friends Forever???
Friendship is one of the purest form of relationships that God has created. Since time immemorial we see the ideals set by Lord Krisna and his beloved friend Sudama; Mahavir Hanuman and his cherished companion Sugriv.

Like love, friendship crosses the barriers of caste, creed, religion or social status. It is simply the union of two or more like minded people sharing and caring about each other's views. Similarly, friendship is independent of age. One can be friends with anyone from a five year to a fifty year old. In fact it is not only strangers who can be termed as friends. In reality, our truest friends are our parents. Unfortunately, we realize this only after crossing a certain age.

I feel that friends are not like mangoes and oranges, that there are best or worst among them. Still, there is always a special someone with whom we can share everything with our eyes closed and for whom we can make sacrifices without thinking twice. That, is the power of true friendship.

Alas! In today's world flatterers in the garb of friends throng our lives. The focus of friendship has shifted from exchange of thoughts to exchange of notes, CDs and the latest video games. It is rightly said that "the easiest way to make a friend is to be one." But instead of thinking what we can give to our friends, we are only interested in what we can get from them. The true essence of friendship is lost.

Certain industrialists and capitalists have taken advantage of this to boost the sale of their greeting cards and friendship bands on a commercialised Friendship Day. I would like to ask that does the relationship of a lifetime need any particular day to be upheld and celebrated? Well, the next time I get lots of friendship bands on this so called Friendship Day, I would surely sit back and wonder how many of them represent the real bonds of friendship.
