Today, Friday’s Comic Con Schedule was released and you can find it here. I signed up for a few more on Thursday’s panel list than I did for Friday but that’s honestly a good thing. It looks like Thursday will be pretty non-stop for me, I’m glad I’ll have Friday to check out the Exhibition Floor! Here are the panels bookworms should be looking forward to:
Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the World
2:00pm – 3:00pm
Fanfiction has recently moved into the spotlight, with fic authors getting impressive book deals and Amazon announcing Kindle Worlds. But there’s a lot more to the story than Fifty Shades of Grey. Panelists Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Christina Lauren (tby789 and LolaShoes, Beautiful Bastard), Rachel Caine (Morganville Vampires, Weather Wardens), V. Arrow (aimmyarrowshigh, The Panem Companion), and Heidi Tandy (heidi8, Organization for Transformative Works) discuss how fan writing-from missing scenes to remixes and crossovers-and other fanworks re-imagine the boundaries of everything from sexuality and gender to character and authorship. They’ll discuss the way fan culture is challenging today’s entertainment and publishing industry norms, and consider the value a noncommercial creative space can bring to emerging and even professional writers and artists. Moderated by Anne Jamison (Fic: Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the World).
Alright, so they said Amber Benson and I’m sold! I’m a huge fan of hers from Buffy but I haven’t read any of her novels yet, this could be my chance! Rachel Caine is a very well-known author (Justine got to meet her at the Smart Chicks Kick It tour!) and this panel promises a unique point-of-view on the controversial world of fan fiction.
Science Fiction That Will Change Your Life
6:45pm – 7:45pm
What science fiction stories from the past year made you think, as well as entertaining you? Panelists talk about the year’s smartest books, comics, movies, and TV with io9 staffers Annalee Newitz, Charlie Jane Anders, Meredith Woerner, and Lauren Davis, joined by Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Middleman), Marc Bernardin (Alphas), Austin Grossman (YOU), Phil Plait (Bad Astronomy), and Jose Molina (Vampire Diaries, Sleepy Hollow).
This was my FAVORITE panel I went to last year! I’ve told this story before but I went into this panel to wait out the one that was to be in that same room later that day and I ended up LOVING it! I went to the library today and got a copy of Austin Grossman’s book Soon I Will Be Invincible and I’m hoping I can have it read before the panel.
Here are all the books I got at the library today:
The con is getting close, I’m already having trouble sleeping I’m so excited! What panels are you excited for on Friday?
