Friday is Rock'n'Roll London Day
Adam writes… In our Friday Rock’n’Roll London slot we’re always keen to recommend a good music read (see earlier posts HERE and HERE.)
This week, we’ve something a little different: the excellent comic Hitsville UK. Friday is Rock'n'Roll London Day
The action is centered around a small, independent record label with a roster of eccentrics, reprobates and country singing aliens.
As we said, something a little different.
There are two issues so far and having devoured issue one, I turned straight back to page one and started again. By turns bleak and sordid, often surreal (I keep humming snatches of Mighty Boosh tunes when I’ve been reading it), always funny with great pop and rock references shot through the narrative, I’m already completely hooked.
After the first few frames – in which sweaty mogul Gerry Corden and freakshow super-producer Greg Pastis track down new talent and drink themselves insensible, I was reminded of the great quote often attributed (wrongly) to Hunter S Thompson: “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.  There's also a negative side.”
I bought my copy (£3.50) at Orbital Comics on Great Newport Street WC2 (we pass nearby on the rout of the Rock’n’Roll London Walk) but you can also get a copy direct from Great Beast Comics at www.store.greatbeastcomics.com
