Friday is Rock'n'Roll London Day
The Great London Sleeves – Please Please Me
The Beatles’ first album was shot with the Fabs looking down the stairwell at EMI’s headquarters in Manchester Square. The photographer was Angus McBean. Friday is Rock'n'Roll London Day
Beatle legend has it that producer George Martin’s original idea was for the band to pose outside the insect house at London Zoo! Permission was denied, even though Martin was a member of the Zoological Society of London. Thus an iconic sleeve was born, a cliché was avoided and London walkers were saved having to schlep all the way to London Zoo on our Beatles walking tours!
The sleeve pictured is our prized, if battered and bruised, mono version on vinyl. It is posing on our equally beloved 1965 Dansette Viva record player.
