Friday Cocktail

Thunderclap cocktail

Summer often brings thunderstorms, so why not try a Thunderclap for a Friday cocktail?

This cocktail dates back at least as far as the early 1960s, appearing in the 1964 edition of Old Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender’s Guide. The guide doesn’t specify what type of whiskey. And while most recipes call for blended whiskey, using a preferred brand may be the better option.

It’s odd that this one’s typically served up in a martini glass. It seems better suited to the snifter (as pictured). But depending on one’s mood, this drink could be served up on the rocks. Regardless, it’s a very easy cocktail to make.

What you’ll need:  Gin, Whiskey, and Brandy

Pour equal portions (1 ounce each) of each liqueur in a shaker over cracked ice. Stir well and then strain into your cocktail glass of choice.

How I like it:  Your choice of gin, whiskey, and brandy will certainly create a unique flavor for this drink. The subtle differences in varying brands and how they blend together will change with each combination. It’s worth experimenting to determine the best version to suit your palate. Here, I’ve chosen Bombay Gin Sapphire, Dewar’s Scotch, and an Apricot Brandy. The flavored-brandy softens the dry bite of the drink somewhat, but may not be the best choice. I do think, however, that the snifter glass is the way to go.

Don’t end up with a thunderous headache, drink responsibly!
