Friday Box Office: ‘Lucy’ Overperforms, ‘Hercules’ Does Too… Kinda

These are just projected numbers. Even if they hold, it means Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy outgrossed Angelina Jolie’s Salt. It is by far her biggest opener outside of a Marvel movie. For Dwayne Johnson, it’s his biggest non-franchise solo opener ever. It’s only behind his opening weekends for films in franchises like GI Joe, The Mummy, and the Fast franchise. It’s also technically behind Get Smart and The Other Guys, but neither of those films did he receive top billing (or even 2nd billing). I’m saying movies like Pain and Gain, Snitch, Faster, Tooth Fairy, Race To Witch Mountain, The Game Plan, Gridiron Gang, Doom, Walking Tall, and The Rundown. Films where Dwayne Johnson was expected to either be the top draw, or 2nd billing (to Mark Wahlberg). It’s a huge boost to his star status as Hercules wasn’t expected to do much, and it did slightly overperform. Also, people are turning up for Philip Seymour Hoffman’s last film, and it might crack the Top 10. It’s in a neck-and-neck battle with 22 Jump Street.
