Ian Spiro started this project in January, 2005 because he was trying to imagine the geographic distribution of fast food locations in the United States.
Phil Dhingra and Ian spent an afternoon hacking something together. The address data was scraped off of Jack in the Box's website and geocoded by scraping from Microsoft's Terraserver.
Listed: 13,642 McDonald's, 7,398 Burger King, 6,171 Pizza Hut, 6,151 Taco Bell, 5,959 Wendy's, 5,414 KFC, 2,029 Jack in the Box, 1,802 Hardee's, 978 Carl's Jr., 203 In-N-Out.
Total of All Chains: 49,747
They even have 10,709 Starbucks locations on this map.
Just for United States for now, hopefully they will do one for Canada next!
