Three Fundamental Rights petitions filed seeking an order quashing the arrest and detention order of Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Convener Mudalige Wasantha Kumara, Ven. Welwewa Siridhamma Thero and Hashan Gunathilake who are currently being held at a detention center in Tangalle were fixed for support on October 18 by the Supreme Court.

The petitions were filed by Attorney-at-Law Manjula Balasooriya on behalf of Ven. Welwewa Siridhamma Thero and Hashan Gunathilake and Attorney-at-Law Rivihara Pinnaduwage on behalf of Wasantha Kumara.

The petitions have cited Defense Secretary Retired General Kamal Gunaratne, IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Director SSP Kavinda Piyasekara, Director SSP Prasanna Alwis, Peliyagoda Police OIC C.I. Kaluwitharana, Thalangama Police OIC C.I. Anil Jayantha and the Attorney General as the respondents.

The petitions say that the arrest of petitioners on August 18 and thereafter their detention under a purported Detention order under the Prevention of Terrorism Act issued by President Ranil Wickremasinghe in his capacity as the Defence Minister is unlawful.

The petitions seek orders quashing the arrest and detention orders as unlawful. The petitions also seek an interim orders suspending the Detention Orders until the final determination of these applications.
