To start her program on Wednesday evening, Rachel Maddow guided viewers through the front pages of the country's main news agencies. Maddow pointed out that the headlines across the board were about the United States crossing a grim milestone: 100,000 deaths from coronavirus. NYT, WaPo, CNN and others were all leading this story, she told viewers.
But there was an outlier. "Just so you know, that's what, on the other hand, is the front page of our friends on Fox News Channel right now," said Maddow. "It's as you can see a little bit different." Indeed, above the fold, Fox covered everything except the death toll.
"If you scroll down and scroll down and scroll down, you end up arriving - they eventually reach, oh yes, 100,000 dead Americans," said Maddow. "They end up getting there."
Maddow's sighting was not unique to the Fox home page. The network's live programming on Wednesday evening was similar. None of his prime-time programming has led to grim news about the death toll. Martha MacCallum, who hosts what is supposed to be Fox's "direct news" program, started her program with the story of a student suspected of two homicides. It took him over 50 minutes to find out about the 100,000 dead Americans. She kept it for her last segment.
Tucker Carlson directed his program with a monologue on "Big Tech censorship". Sean Hannity with live coverage of the Minneapolis protests. And Laura Ingraham with a call to reopen the country and an attack on Dr. Anthony Fauci. Ingraham even found time for a "FARTGATE 2020" segment. (You really can't make up for it.)
Like the president, whose Twitter feed focused on everything but the death toll Wednesday evening, Fox looked away when the death toll exceeded 100,000. If historians were to return to Fox News the night the country killed 100,000 people, they would be forgiven if they didn't know it had happened.
This is of course part of a larger scheme. A study by progressive watchdog Media Matters found that "between May 11 and May 26, the total number of digital coronavirus deaths in the United States was only reported between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Fox only 11 times in almost 36 hours of programming ". And I've already reported that Fox swapped its coronavirus coverage for a week to participate in President Obama's conspiracy.
All this is remarkable. We live in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest stories of a generation, and the country's most-watched cable information network continues to put it on hold.
