Formlabs was one of the few desktop 3D printing companies to withstand the massive tech bubble a few years ago. The Somerville, Massachusetts-based company has distinguished itself by bringing advanced industrial 3D printing technologies to the consumer space. In recent years, the technology has also positioned the startup ahead of the competition when it comes to expanding into different aspects of manufacturing.

Medicine and dentistry were two key goals. Products like prosthetics and restraints are two prime examples of products that can benefit from both customization and rapid manufacturing. Today, the company announced the Form 3BL, a medicine- and dentistry-focused version of the recently announced Form 3L, its $ 10,000 large-format stereolithography printer.

The Form 3BL shares most of the 3L's specifications, including a build volume that is approximately five times larger than the standard Form 3 printer. The main differentiator is the optimization for biocompatible materials. The system is designed to be used in the office by healthcare professionals and dentists to quickly produce dental models and needs in-house.

Another novelty today is the Wash L + Cure L, for the treatment of large objects after initial printing. It will ship in 2021. The Form 3L will actually begin shipping today, in the meantime, and the 3BL is available for pre-order today and will ship at some point next month.
